For those of us Texans who are unfamiliar with subway and other heavy electric mass-transit systems, a “third rail” runs alongside the track and supplies 700 volts of electricity to the motors that run the cars. Touching it could kill or severely injure a human. Thus, it has become a common, though somewhat hackneyed, metaphor for issues politicians touch at their peril.
Two Colorado State Senators learned the hard way that the right to keep and bear arms is such an issue, in that state at least. Democratic State Senators John Morse, who was the President of the state senate, and Angela Giron were recalled by the voters in their districts on Tuesday. Both will be replaced by Republicans.
